Pedal Power, Explained: Why Your Board Hums, Clicks, and Dies (and the $0-to-$150 Fixes)
Nobody starts playing guitar to learn about power supplies, which is why pedal power is the most neglected part of every board and the secret cause of half its problems. The hum you blamed on the venue, the click when your delay engages, the digital pedal that reboots mid-song: power, power, and power. Here’s the whole subject in plain English, organized by how much trouble each mistake actually causes.
The three numbers on every pedal
Every pedal wants three things matched: voltage (almost always 9V DC; get this wrong in the too-high direction and you can kill a pedal, so treat stray 12V and 18V plugs like loaded weapons), polarity (the guitar world standardized on center-negative, the opposite of most consumer electronics, which is exactly why the random wall-wart from the junk drawer is dangerous), and current (milliamps: the pedal draws what it needs, the supply must offer at least that much, and more available current is never harmful, a fact that would end half the confused forum threads on this subject). Analog dirt and boost pedals sip 10 to 50 mA; modern digital delays, reverbs, and multi-effects gulp 200 to 500 mA. Add up your board’s total and you know most of what you need.
The daisy chain: fine until it isn’t
The one-supply-splits-to-everything daisy chain is how every board starts, and honestly, for a small board of analog pedals it’s mostly fine: quiet, cheap, functional. It fails in two predictable ways. Run short of current and pedals brown out (weird behavior, dying LEDs, digital units rebooting). Mix digital and analog pedals on one chain and you get the signature whine and tick: digital pedals generate clock noise that rides the shared power line straight into your gain pedals, which amplify it faithfully. If your board is three analog dirt pedals and a tuner, a $25 daisy chain with adequate milliamps is genuinely all you need, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. The moment one digital pedal joins the party, the calculus changes.
Isolated supplies: what the money buys
An isolated supply gives each output its own electrically separate section, so pedals can’t pollute each other’s power. That single property solves the digital whine, kills a whole family of ground-loop hums, and quietly fixes problems you’d stopped noticing you had. It also buys headroom per output, sometimes selectable voltage (some drives sound different at 18V, if the maker blesses it), and the deep reliability of a board that behaves identically at home and at the gig. Real isolated supplies start around $100 to $150, and the classic buying mistake is under-counting future pedals; buy at least two more outputs than you own pedals, because boards grow.
One warning label: the market is full of cheap bricks with many outputs that are not isolated, just one section split many ways with better packaging than a daisy chain. The word “isolated” in the listing plus a price that seems too good is usually the tell. If it costs $30 and has ten outputs, it’s a daisy chain in a metal costume.
Batteries, and other myths
Quick housekeeping on the folklore. Batteries are actually the quietest power source in physics terms (no mains, no loops), and a fading carbon battery in a fuzz genuinely does sound different; but for a working board they’re a memory game you’ll eventually lose on stage, and unplugging every cable after practice to save them gets old by week two. The “power conditioner” that costs more than your amp does nothing your isolated supply doesn’t. Small all-analog board: daisy chain with enough total milliamps, spend the savings on a pedal. Any digital pedal on board, or any hum you can’t explain: isolated supply, it’s the least glamorous $150 that will ever improve your sound. Touring or gigging regularly: isolated, mounted under the board, with spare cables taped inside the case, because the only power failure worse than a noisy one is the one at soundcheck. And whatever you buy, add up your milliamps first; it’s the only arithmetic in guitar that always pays.
